MATSURI

There are countless local festivals (matsuri) in Japan because almost every shrine celebrates one of its own. Most festivals are held annually and celebrate the shrine's deity or a seasonal or historical event. Some festival are held over several days. An important element of Japanese festivals are processions, in which the local shrine's kami (Shinto deity) is carried through the town in mikoshi (palanquins). It is the only time of the year when the kami leaves the shrine to be carried around town. Many festivals also feature decorated floats (dashi), which are pulled through the town, accompanied by drum and flute music by the people sitting on the floats. Every festival has its own characteristics. While some festivals are calm and meditative, many are energetic and noisy.an assortment of pictures can be seen below

Claude McKay (September 15, 1889)– May 22, 1948) was a Jamaican writer and poet. He was a communist in his early life, but after a visit to the Soviet Union, decided that communism was too disciplined and confining. He was never an actual member of the Communist Party. McKay was involved in the Harlem Renaissance and wrote three novels: Home to Harlem (1928), a best-seller which won the Harmon Gold Award for Literature, Banjo (1929), and Banana Bottom (1933). McKay also authored a collection of short stories, Gingertown (1932), and two autobiographical books, A Long Way from Home (1937) and Harlem: Negro Metropolis (1940). His book of poetry, Harlem Shadows (1922) was among the first books published during the Harlem Renaissance. His book of collected poems, Selected Poems (1953), was published posthumously.

Paul Bunyan
Now I hear tell that Paul Bunyan was born in Bangor, Maine. It took five giant storks to deliver Paul to his parents. His first bed was a lumber wagon pulled by a team of horses. His father had to drive the wagon up to the top of Maine and back whenever he wanted to rock the baby to sleep. As a newborn, Paul Bunyan could hollar so loud he scared all the fish out of the rivers and streams. All the local frogs started wearing earmuffs so they wouldn't go deaf when Paul screamed for his breakfast. His parents had to milk two dozen cows morning and night to keep his milk bottle full and his mother had to feed him ten barrels of porrige every two hours to keep his stomach from rumbling and knocking the house down. Within a week of his birth, Paul Bunyan could fit into his father's clothes. After three weeks, Paul rolled around so much during his nap that he destroyed four square miles of prime timberland. His parents were at their wits' end! They decided to build him a raft and floated it off the coast of Maine. When Paul turned over, it caused a 75 foot tidal wave in the Bay of Fundy. They had to send the British Navy over to Maine to wake him up. The sailors fired every canon they had in the fleet for seven hours straight before Paul Bunyan woke from his nap! When he stepped off the raft, Paul accidentally sank four war ships and he had to scramble around sccooping sailors out of the water before they drowned.

GREEK MYHTOLOGY

in the greek world, myhtology has been a significant part of their culture. i myself find greek myhtology to be extremely interseting. in my mind, it ties together and fits like special puzzle peices. within greek myhtology contains olympian gods, titans, and mythical creatures. the gods include Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Hera, Aris, Athena, Apollo, Aphrodite, Hermes, Artemis, Hephaestus. the titans are Gaea, Uranus, Cronus, Rhea, Oceanus, Tethys, Hyperion, Mnemosyne, Themis, Iapetus, Coeus, Crius, Phoebe, Thea, Prometheus, Epimetheus, Atlas, Metis. what really got me into the greek mythological world was agame called god of war. in that game the titans try to defeat the gods, with the main character, kratos, trying to get revenge. his story not so much, but the titans and gods story intrigued me. i found it to be capturing and exciting.

langston hughes was one of the greatest black poets of all time. he was a t his peak during the harlem renaissance, which was a time of african american revival. the poem a dream deffered tells what happens to something not pursued or ignored. hughes makes the reader understand how precious and important dreams can be. if not taken of and if not pursued, well:

A dream deferred
What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

A series of explosions rocked southern Afghanistan's volatile Kandahar province on Saturday, killing at least 35 people and wounding 47 others, according to a spokesperson for the provincial governor.Provincial Gov. Toryalai Wesa confirmed the blasts hits four locations. One of the explosions struck near the police headquarters in Kandahar, said Wesa's spokesman, Zalmai Ayoubi. Another blast struck near the province's prison, and caused the collapse of some residences. An unknown number of people are believed to be dead or trapped in the rubble, Ayoubi said. The casualties include security forces and civilians, he said, adding that both the death toll and the injuries are expected to increase.Coalition forces in Kabul said the International Security Assistance Force in Kandahar was not targeted. Last week, the top U.S. general in Afghanistan vowed that coalition forces "are absolutely going to secure Kandahar," as security efforts expand in the country's south.

C.B. brooks "the street sweeper"

C. B. Brooks designed the street sweeper and patented it on March 17, 1896. Prior to his invention, streets were cleaned manually by workers picking up trash by hand or sweeping it with brooms. Brooks' invention was made of a truck with a series of broom-like brushes attached which pushed trashe and debris off onto the side of the road. his invention is used still today. it is extremely effective and gets the job done. brooks invention is not only useful to me, but useful to many other americans. had it not been for the street sweeper we would be living in filth. streets would be unsanitary and there would be crucial health issues. along with millions of others i am thankful for his invention.

student tasered

taser-a small gunlike device that fires electric darts to incapacitate a person temporarily.

on February 2, 2010 there was a dangerous outbreak in a Pennsylvania school. the incident happened when two girls began fighting at a basketball game. things began to get serious and players got involved. after seeing the extremeness of the matter the police officers used a taser to stun a student. the kids in the video looked surprised and shocked at the police officers reaction. after viewing the video i myself was stunned at the behavior of the police. it seemed as if they were overreacting. they weren't following the law, only abusing their power. i agree that some action needed to take place, but repeatedly tasering a student seems out of line. the video of the incident can be seen at my fox.com

on Saturday, February 27 2010 Chile suffered a devastating earthquake that have scientists saying it shortened days. The massive earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday may have shifted the Earth's axis and created shorter days, scientists at NASA say. according to NASA scientists, because of the earthquake days are now 1.26 microseconds shorter. A microsecond is one-millionth of a second. Scientists use the analogy of a skater. When he pulls in his arms, he spins faster. That's because pulling in his arms changes the distribution of the skater's mass and therefore the speed of his rotation. On the other hand, the length of a day also can increase. For example, if the Three Gorges reservoir in China were filled, it would hold 10 trillion gallons (40 cubic kilometers) of water. The shift of mass would lengthen days by 0.06 microsecond, scientists said. Chile earthquake

one of womens issues in america is the epidemic of breast cancer. every year many women lose their lives due to breast cancer. women have been unaware about symptons in the past, but as time progressed they are becoming more and more aware. women have to take treatment and have the breast with the cancer removed to eliminate it. usually a lump is formed, which is the cancer within the tissue. when this happens, as i said above, the breast has to be removed. the topic of breast cancer is a wide and broad surface issue. there are people rallying however to put a stop to it. groups march to preach awareness and tell how to prevent it. with progress and fight breast cancer can be maintained and put to rest. breast cancer

this is super bowl weekend. it is one of the most exciting and highly anticipated weekends ever. everyone counts down to the big day of the superbowl. the streets are busy with chatter of winning predictions. the two teams in this years superbowl are the indianapolis colts and the new orleans saints. the are the #1 and 2 teams in the nfl. they have extremely talented quarterbacks leading their teams. i think it will ultimately come down to them. it has all the makings to be a shootout, but i think it will go to the colts. peyton manning is too much of a great for the saints to overcome.

This is the weekend of the pro bowl. the bowl is a game in which 86 of the nfl's greatest players come together and play in an AFC and NFC game. strangely though, there were some changes made to this years pro bowl. first off, its being held in miami when it is usually held in hawaii. second;y, the pro bowl is usually held the week after the super bowl, but now it is being held a week before. these new stipulations have great effects on the pro bowl. half the experience was going to hawaii. it was something really special to go and play there. and with the pro bowl being a week before the super bowl, the two teams in the super bowl don't want to play because of risk of injury. while they would love to, the super bowl is more important. there are plenty of talented athletes in the NFL, so it should still be a good game. the pro bowl will be coming on at 7:20 tomorrow. with all the all stars it looks to be a good game, so make sure to tune in. 2010 NFL pro bowl

we are currently in the heart of the NFL playoffs. the afc championship game is between the jets and the colts. the nfc game is between the vikings and the saints. i am NOT a jets fan by any means, so i am rooting for the colts (go #18!!!). as far as the vikingsv. saints go i think the vikings will win. brett favre is still great and they have major weapons at their disposal. it should be a great weekend and i cannot wait till i get to watch it. if things go as i say they will, the superbowl in miami should be between the indianapolis colts and the minnesota vikings. i am wrong sometimes, but i should be pretty accurate with this prediction.

martin luther king " the other america"

based on the speech that i read and my prior knowledge of dr. king he was a great speaker. he spoke with power, meaning, and fluidity. dr. king spoke with a cause. his speech "the other america" was about the seperation between not only the blacks and whites, but all the minorities and whites in america. it was evident that king felt not only for the negro race in his era, but for all those who faced discrimination. the speech spoke about segregation blacks faced throughout the south. what he was saying was 100% true. things like bathrooms, movie theaters, and other public facilities were segregated to make the black man feel insignificant. through his speech he opened the eyes of many to the horrors of what black people had to go through. martin luther king was an inspirational speaker to the public, a leader to the black people, and an inspiration to the world.

from jr. high to high school was probably the hardest transition i've had to make ever. in jr. high i was king of acadmeics. nobody could touch me. i was the best of the best. at the pinnacle of my career, i was extremely cocky. the only bad thing about that is that i got lazy. it took an extreme wake up call to knock me off my high horse. when i got to high school i realized i wasn't the best and had to learn how to work hard. it took a while but i finally got there. i now study and pay attention to be succesful. like i said earlier from jr. high to high school was probably the hardest transition i've had to make ever.

on friday january 1st, 2010 michael bloomberg became the fourth mayor in nyc history to go for a third term. Michael bloomberg isn't the city's most beloved man, but he must be doing something right to be going for a third term. according to the new york times.com bloomberg's first eight years were nothing special, not close to his status now. i believe bloomberg understands the significance of his accomplishment. from his tone i believe he does and he will make the most of it. atop the steps of city hall he said "the building behind me is yours, and the job in front of me is to listen and to lead".
